Whey and plant protein both build muscle — the real difference is digestion, amino acid profile, and what fits your diet.
Both whey and plant-based protein can build and maintain muscle when total daily protein intake is adequate — the differences that actually matter are absorption speed, amino acid completeness, and how each fits into your diet.
Whey is a complete protein with a high leucine content, the amino acid most responsible for triggering muscle protein synthesis. Most single-source plant proteins (rice, pea) are missing or low in one or more essential amino acids, which is why quality plant blends combine two or more sources — pea plus rice, for example — to cover the gap.
Whey digests quickly, making it a strong post-workout option. Plant proteins generally digest a little slower and can sit heavier for some people, though this varies a lot by brand and formulation.
Either way, protein powder is a convenience tool, not a requirement — whole food sources (eggs, dairy, legumes, meat) count toward the same daily target. A coach can help you work out how much you actually need and where it should come from.
